Relationship between inflammatory indexes in peripheral blood of COPD patients at stable stage and comprehensive assessment of disease severity

Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 6

Abstract

Objective To observe the expression of cytokines and inflammatory indexes in peripheral blood of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) in different groups at stable stage, and analyze their correlation with disease severity, so as to achieve the purpose of precision diagnosis and treatment. Methods A total of 75 patients with COPD were included and divided into group A, B, C, and D according to GOLD guidelines, including 20 patients with low risk and few symptoms in group A, 19 with low risk and many symptoms in group B, 17 with high risk and few symptoms in group C, and 19 with high risk and many symptoms in Group D. Baseline data, blood routine, and various cytokines indexes of patients with COPD were collected. The differences of inflammatory indexes in patients with COPD between different groups were compared, and the relationship between inflammatory indexes and comprehensive assessment of disease severity was analyzed. Results There were significant differences in neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) between group A, B, C and D (P < 0. 05, P < 0. 01). NLR, PLR, SII and SIRI showed an upward trend with the increase of disease severity. There were differences in IL-6 among groups ( P < 0. 01), and there was an upward trend with the increase of disease severity. There were significant differences in IL-8 between group B and group C, and between group C and group D (P < 0. 01). NLR, PLR, SII, SIRI and IL-6 were positively correlated with the severity of COPD (P < 0. 05, P < 0. 01). IL-1β and IL-6 were negatively correlated with FEV1 / FVC and FEV1 / pred (P < 0. 05). Conclusion NLR, PLR, SII, SIRI and IL-6 are closely related to the disease severity of COPD patients, while IL-1β and IL-6 are negatively related to pulmonary function in COPD patients.
