RENAMING IN UKRAINIAN OICONYMY OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE XX – THE BEGINNING OF THE XXI century: EXPERIENCE AND PROSPECTS

Abstract
On the basis of open historical sources (directories of the administrative-territorial division of URSR), the article describes the examples of renaming settlements nominations of Ukraine during the post-war period. Attention is focused on the socio-political motives of changing the settlements names in different regions of the republic. There are examples of oiconyms certifying different, sometimes ideological, bias of nominations of URSR. The relevance of the study is represented by the modern toponymic question what appeared in Ukraine in the midst of the process of toponymy decommunisation opposite to the process of the experience of renaming that took place during the second half of the last century. The article contains a list of the main arguments in favor of unmotivated renaming that occurred in the twentieth century. The fundamental question of the article is the quality replacement of settlements nominations in Ukraine, which formed a highly spiritual and national consciousness of the country’s citizens.
