Retrospective Recall of School Bullying by Prospective Teachers and Their Current Beliefs about School Violence

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate prospective teachers’ personal experiences of school bullying, current beliefs about peer violence and relationship between them. This is a quite new perspective which takes into account sensitivity and understanding of bullying by teachers at the earliest stages of their professional career. The point is to start proper preparation and eventual improvement of the situation of prospective teachers at the beginning of their ‘social mission’ service.The specially designed instruments were used to collect data: (1) The Retrospective School Bullying Experiences Questionnaire, which measured bullying victimization, perpetration and bystander experiences during primary, middle and secondary school and (2) The Bullying Beliefs Questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed within the academic year 2014-2015 prior the students attending faculty of education at [details removed for peer review].Results of this study indicated that: (1) prospective teachers recalled some involvement in school bullying as a bystander and victim, as well as some participants admitted to sporadic manifestations of aggressive behaviors throughout school days; (2) majority of respondents expressed pedagogical correctness approach toward school bullying; (3) there was no significant relation between personal past bullying experiences and pedagogical correctness approach but past manifestations of bullying behaviors were linked with current immature beliefs which are typical for adolescents. The study provided a unique account of how adults view their school experiences and what they think now about school bullying. Didactical conclusions of these results were commented and implications for teachers training were discussed.<br/><br/>
