Rheumatology covers a broad area of disorders including diseases of borderline between internal medicine and clinical immunology. A number of “new diseases” has been identified, a significant progress of genetics and immunology leads to better understanding of natural history of several patological states.
Development of therapeutical methods, from aspirine to biologics is a great progress and is associated with alteration of management as well as a significant increase in cost of the treatment.
The shape of rheumatology in future depends on its position in medicine and application of achievements of the basic sciences. There are several challenges including epidemiological investigations (morbidity, survival of the patients, iatrogenic complications etc.). Equally important is focusing on the patient as individual human being.
