Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 4

Abstract

Background. Football remains one of the most popular disciplines all over the world. It is classified as a sport of high injuries rate. The aim of the study was to examine the risk factors concerning occurrence of injuries experienced by lower league football players and prophylactics and physiotherapy possibilities. Material and methods. The sample consisted of a group of 90 football players aged 16- 42 (mean 22 ± 4.1). The average weight of the respondents was 77.37± 9.7 kg, and the average body height 181±6.2 cm, and BMI (Body Mass Index) was 23.6 ± 2.3. In data analysis, non-parametric tests, U-Mas-Whitney’s test and Chi test were used. A two-sided significance level at p <0.05 was used. Results. There were no significant correlations between age and injuries, BMI and injuries, and training experience and injuries. Out of 90 respondents, 87% have been injured. The most common injuries are strains constituting 57% of all injuries, bruises amounting to 40% and sprains 38%. Leg injuries mainly concerned an ankle with 44% of all cases and a knee with 33%. Fifty six percent of all of the cases constituted direct injuries, out of which, 36% were caused by an overload. The remaining 64% of injuries were experienced during the match, with 28% at the training and 10% in other cases.Conclusions. Football is a sport with high injury rate, in which the most common injuries were bruises and sprains with ligament damage. Most injuries recognized by the players involved the lower extremities in particular the ankle and knee joints. Factors that increase the risk of injury were improper diet or excessive training, missing or not properly conducted warm-up, and too rapid return to physical activity after the injury.
