RUSSIAN MODERNISM, UKRAINIAN SECESSION – PARALLELS IN TIME AND SPACE

Abstract
The article is dedicated to the research on the problems of modernism/secession in Russian and Ukrainian musical cultures in the late 19th century – the early 20th century. The study focuses on the dissemination of this term and its meaning in different countries around the world. A parallel is drawn to identify common aesthetic dominants between the painting “Demon” by M. Vrubel and the symphonic poem-nocturne “Angel” by F. Yakymenko. The main conclusions are supported by musical-theoretical analysis on all components of musical composition (form, harmony, texture, orchestration). Analytical observations are designed to reveal individual parallels with a picturesque prototype.
