Sechs kleine Klavierstücke op. 19 by Arnold schönberg – their musical language, expression and artistic message

Journal Title: Notes Muzyczny - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Sechs kleine Klavierstücke op. 19 for piano by Arnold Schönberg is a unique cycle, in which we observe a new musical language being shaped. Together with tonality suspense in each miniature we have new sound horizons . Schönberg’s sound became a superior element in which his inner vision was subjectively materialized. A pure form – the subject of artistic experiments of this outstanding creator – was aiming towards the essence of form and the maximum expressive concentration. We can see the extreme aphoristic form of art understood that way in each miniature from the described cycle. In op. 19 the composer consciously departs from tonality. However, when we analyze the cycle we notice that many atonal harmonic connections still belong to the neoclassical style. Each of the six miniatures is analysed in this article and presents the composer’s ideas which outline a direction of development of his further creative path. The publication is aimed at familiarizing readers with the musical language used by Schönberg, as well as with his philosophical and aesthetical attitude towards the world around him. The article explains the basic aesthetical principles and describes the key terms necessary for a proper understanding of Schönberg’s music connected with Klangfarbenmelodie (sound-colour-melody).
