SINAIS TERENA E GRAFOCENTRISMO EM LÍNGUAS DE SINAIS CONTRIBUIÇÕES TEÓRICAS

Abstract
In this article we consider the existence of what we call “graphocentrism” in sign languages, and with this we focus on the terena signs, from the terena deaf community of Mato Grosso do Sul. We try to show that these signs were not, in their origin, influenced by the writing of the Portuguese language, the majority language in the country, or by the new writing of the oral terena language, or by writing of any other oral language. This once again shows its originality and points to its autonomy as a linguistic system, although, of course, like any system, it can have loans of all kinds. As is well known, European sign languages have suffered influence of the writing of majority languages in their country, as was the case, for example, with the French Sign Language, which in turn gave rise to the Libras (Brazilian Sign Language). The factors for this influence are discussed throughout the work. Before that, however, we present the Terena people, the deaf Terena informants from the SUMAIO survey (2014) and some signs they use.
