Abstract

Despite horror stories have been accompanying humanity since its beginnings, the literature of this genre started receiving the spotlight only from the XVIII century, and it found in Edgar Allan Poe one of its main exponents in the following century. Considered by the critics as one of the greatest writers of the American Literature, Poe stood out with his short stories and poems theming fear, death, mystery, and the unfolding of the dark and gloomy side of human being. The main aim of this article is to present the narrative similarities of two of the most famous horror short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, The Black Cat and The Tell-Tale Heart, both published in 1843, in which the narrators describe in a detailed and cold way, how they committed their crimes. For doing so, we present some definitions and characteristics of Horror Literature (KING, 2012; LOVECRAFT, 1987), as well as something about Edgar Allan Poe’s biography, focusing on relevant facts for his constitution as one of the greatest writers of this genre of all times.
