Singing in view of interdisciplinary empirical research and theoretical reflections

Journal Title: "Konteksty Kształcenia Muzycznego" - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

Contemporary research on the role and importance of singing, just to mention the work by Thomas Blank and Karl Adamek (2010), indicates the link between the ability to sing and the so-called educational preparedness as well as health of children. The research in question has provided empirical evidence showing that singing constitutes an irreplaceable component of children’s development in all its aspects: physical, mental and social. It proves to be particularly true in terms of speech development, social behaviors and the ability to restrain emotions. The subject matter of the study makes the research on the development of correct intonation in early-school children, i.e. in the critical period for learning clear intonation. The author analyzes the condition of vocal competences in Poland since 1978. She concludes that even though the world seems to recognize the advantages of singing more and more keenly, the awareness of that fact in Poland still has not been developed. What is more, we have been observing a considerable decline in the level of vocal skills in children and adolescents for several years. Intonation difficulties appear mainly in state school pupils, which results from a truly dramatic marginalization of music classes in grades I-III.
