«SMOOTH SPACE» OF LVIV THROUGH THE PRISM OF NOMADIC CONSCIOUSNESS IN SMALL PROSE OF YURIY IZDRIK (on materials Catch a lion, Lviv: sequential psychosis, Levels of Lviv)

Abstract

This article considers principles of a new topology which were established by poststructuralists Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari who suggested the сoncept of smooth space as an embodiment of decentering centre. The ideas of researchers apply to the art image of Lviv through the small prose of Yuriy Izdrik where the author rethinks the image of the city as one that was marginalized and dislodged. Subjects of this study are the image of Lviv and a hero-nomad who is exploring decentralized space of the city. The purposes of this research are 1) to consider the image of Lviv as a marginal city; 2) to determine the role and place of a marginal hero in here; 3) to describe ways of expression processes of spatial mutations in creating the image of Lviv through the prism of the hero's consciousness. The chosen method of research is poststructuralist deconstruction. And the art image of a marginal city discloses through images of the «Apocalypse virus» as a decentralization metaphor, the symbol of the crowd as an obstacle to the hero’s self-identification and his alienation and, as a result, the necessity to transpose over existing boundaries. The main function of a hero-nomad and his wandering is to gather fragmented space recalling specific loci. The results of the research reveal the main intentions of not only small prose of Yurii Izdrik, but also postmodern texts in general.
