LITERATURING THE SLOGAN «EAST AND WEST TOGETHER» BY GALYNA PAHUTYAK

Abstract

A Lviv writer, Shevchenko National Prize Laureate, Galyna Pahutyak crosses imaginary, actual and relative borders often as an artist – through her works, and as a modern pilgrim – traveling around the world. In her story The New Year in Istanbul (2015), the artist accentuates the slogan «East and West together» from different perspectives, turning to literary allusions, mirroring historical events, museum and natural artifacts. The story is about Orans in St. Sofia Cathedrals of Kyiv and Constantinople, Europeanized Turkey and striving for Russia’s imperialism and Ukrainian authorities. The idea of unity through cultural heritage emerges brightly, exemplified by memories about the Sumerians by the children’s reading of Kosidovsky’s books, and shared pain for wars in Mesopotamia and in Ukraine, and appeal to the feelings of imprisoned Stus. Among the literary allusions, accentuating universal ideals of magnanimity and love that are able to overcome geographical, religious, language and age boundaries, we meet Robinson Crusoe by Defoe, Iliad, Odyssey by Homer, Metamorphoses by Ovid, Çalıkuşu by Güntekin, the Epic of Gilgamesh, The Ring of the Dove by Ibn Hazm, works by Hesse and Salinger, Paul Amnuelem. The history of Turkey, comprehended by the traveler, arose existential recognition of the Ukrainian patriot that «being on the border of war and peace is more difficult than to plunge into the very war». The passage on overcoming boundaries through art – a brief story about relations of Professor Jan Rustem and his apprentice Taras Shevchenko in Vilnius – is rather expressive.
