SOME ISSUES OF SEMANTICS OF CZECH VERBAL NOUNS ENDING in -NÍ/-TÍ

Abstract

The article considers the lexical semantics of the Czech verbal noun ending in -ní/-tí as to its adherence to the category of correlation of the motivating verb. The study substantiates that the lexical parallelism of verbal nouns like oklepávání and oklepání, which are derived from the polysemantic verbs oklepávat and oklepat as a correlation pair, not only exemplifies systematic derivation and retention of the verb stem but also signifies an important condition for preserving the correlation differences in their structure. Synchronic corpora SYN v.3 and SYN 2015 of the Czech language are used as sources of illustrating the semantics of such verbal nouns in actual use. Secondary substantive meanings of verbal nouns are not taken into account in the study. More than two hundred substantival pairs have been analyzed for the lexical identity of their correlates as to the source stems and, respectively, to each other. It has been determined that verbal nouns in comparison with the verb stems have a narrow spectrum of their action semantics and cannot retain expressive, stylistically limited, bound and impersonal meanings. Besides, the semantic structure of the substantives preserves rather inconsistently the secondary, transferred meanings that reveal the least perceptible conceptual connection with the direct nominative meaning. However, it is emphasized that verbal nouns which end in -ní/-tí and are motivated by correlation pairs of polysemantic verbs are lexically identical in most cases. Exceptions are not more than 20 % of the total number of the substantive pairs studied, and the overall tendency is not fundamentally violated. Special consideration is given to rare cases of lexical divergence in verbal noun pairs. The study highlights the importance of doing profound research on the semantic structure of verbal nouns in view of the lack of due attention to this problem in modern Bohemistics.
