Sound E Formant Change in Lithuanian Language

Journal Title: Profesinės Studijos: Teorija ir Praktika - Year 2006, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

139 words from 1200 more frequently used words with different sound e surrounding were selected for investigation. Praat program was used for word annotation into phonemes. The values of formants also were calculated by Praat program. Authors identified that 139 words contain 108 different types of syllables. 108 different syllables were classified into 21 group (according to different surrounding of sound e). The analysis of the first four formants showed that the formant movement is independent from sound e surroundings. Then the syllables were classified according to the type of the stress. The analysis showed that the formant movement is independent from the type of stress. Research authors were of the opinion that intensity of sound depends on stress, and formant movement depends on sound intensity. Possibly, contradictory results were got because of inaccurate annotation or inaccurate analysis. The research showed that authors need to use more advanced way of analyses.
