SPEECH DEVELOPMENT OF THREE-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN BORN IN BILINGUAL FAMILIES

Abstract

Relevance of the study: in the Southern region of Ukraine, a large number of families of mixed nationalities are represented. Children in such families from early childhood are under conditions of several languages (two, and sometimes more), which, in its turn, influences the development of the child’s speech. Well-known domestic linguists, psychologists and educators as well as foreign scientists made a significant contribution to the study of the problem regarding bilingualism within the context of the contact between the state (Ukrainian) language and both the languages of national minorities and foreign languages. The purpose of the article is to identify the characteristics of the speech development of the young children born in bilingual families. The regulation that a comprehensive understanding of the state and characteristics of children’s speech development as a means of communication can be obtained only in the process of comprehensive psychological and pedagogical research, linguistic analysis of children’s speech activity is revealed in the article. The results of the study related to the young children’ speech development in preschool educational institutions of Odessa in order to identify children from bilingual families are presented. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the results concerning the examination of young children’s speech are presented in compliance with these criteria: understanding of speech, development level of children’s passive and active vocabulary, assimilation of grammatical categories, assimilation of the speech sound and syllable structures, prosodic framework of children’s speech. The tasks developed in accordance with these criteria are described in the article: tell about , name a / the picture, repeat after me what in the pictures is shown, add a sentence, and listen to the story. Some principles and pedagogical conditions for the speech development of the young children born in bilingual families are revealed in the article.
