STRESS AND PSYCHOSOCIAL RISK ASSESSMENT

Abstract

This article analyses objective and subjective reasons for underestimating the risk of psychosocial problems and stress and its place in current national legislation. In order to raise awareness and to improve the understanding of the problem (importance and size of the problem and its consequences for health and efficiency of workers and organizations) and the knowledge and skills of employers and professionals in health and safety, various issues related to early phases of the cycle of workplace psychosocial risk management are assessed like: basic concepts, definitions and methods for psychosocial risk assessment. The causes of stress at work, its mechanisms and effects on health and organizations are systematized. Imbalance between demands and resources is a sign of "risky" workplaces and groups of workers and potential problems, associated with symptoms of stress. The author gives an example of work psychological study of risk for 165 employees (average age 50 years), which covers psychosocial conditions and stress sources at work, psychosomatic complaints, work-related health effects. The results show psychosocial work conditions and indicators of moderate risk, which may adversely affect the wellbeing of staff. The article describes methods for detecting and assessing psychosocial risk factors at work, risk assessment table to be used for each identified risk, possible conclusions from risk assessment and further. It provides arguments for regular monitoring of psychosocial risk as best practice and opportunity for its management.
