Study of association between Hypothyroidism and kidney dysfunction
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Biochemistry - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
Thyroid hormones have a significant impact on kidney health and disease. Thyroid hormones have pre-renal and intrinsic renal effects by which they increase the renal blood flow and Glomerular filtration rate. Several studies indicate that thyroid hormones directly influence normal growth, development and physiology of kidneys. Hypothyroidism is associated with reduced GFR, increased serum Creatinine and blood Urea levels indicating renal dysfunction with several molecular and hemodynamic factors regulated by thyroid hormones. The purpose of this study was to screen for renal disease in hypothyroid patients and to find association between kidney dysfunction and hypothyroidism. A study on RFT (serum creatinine and blood urea levels) in newly diagnosed 40 hypothyroidism patients attended OPD over a period of 4 months and 40 age and sex matched healthy controls was done. The statistical analysis of serum T3 (P<0.001), T4 (P<0.001), TSH (P<0.001), Urea (P<0.001) and serum creatinine (P<0.001) were highly significant indicating significant association between kidney dysfunction and thyroid profile. There is a consistent and reversible increase of serum creatinine and Urea levels in the hypothyroid state. Most of the renal anifestations of thyroid disorders, which are clinically most significant with Hypothyroidism, are reversible with treatment and this study needs further evaluation.

The study of C reactive protein, plasma fibrinogen, urinary albumin creatinine ratio and superoxide dismutase as biomarkers in hypertension
Objective: To study four biomarkers from distinct biological pathways that lead to hypertension, namely high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs CRP), fibrinogen, urinary albumin Creatinine ratio(UACR) and superoxide dism...
Levels of sialic acid, lactate dehydrogenase and -glutamyl transferase in patients with carcinoma breast
Background: Breast cancer is a malignant proliferation of epithelial cells lining the ducts or lobules of the breast. It is difficult to diagnose a patient in the early stages of the disease, therefore essential to devel...
Urinary NGAL as an early marker of renal injury in Type II diabetics
Background: Microalbuminuria is a reversible stage of renal dysfunction in Diabetic patients and it’s detection allows early intervention thus checking its progress to ESRD. However, Microalbuminuria is transient and may...
Early diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy using spot urine microalbumin in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
Background: The studies using newer diagnostic methods to detect urinary albumin excretion (UAE) sub-clinically have given hopes of detecting early nephropathy and possible intervention to retard or reverse nephropathy a...
Relationship between glycosylated haemoglobin and risk of microalbuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common chronic diseases in most countries. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most common complications, and an important cause of renal failure. Microalbuminuria is the ear...
