Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Acute abdomen is one of the most common presentation, with which the patients are brought to the surgical OPD or casualty in any hospital. Laparotomies are one of the most commonly performed surgeries on an emergency basis. Most of the time, it is done as a life-saving procedure. Materials and methods: This record based cross sectional study was done in Department Of Surgery at Government Medical College of Rajnandgaon (C.G.) India, wherein the retrospective data available from MRD section of the hospital, on the patients admitted to the male and female surgical wards, from August 2013 to July 2017 was considered for the study. As per the available data, a total of 164 patients (coming from urban, tribal and rural areas around Rajnandgaon) who underwent emergency laparotomy for acute abdomen were included in the study. Results: In most of the cases the diagnosis was perforation peritonitis 113 (68.90%) followed by appendicitis 31 (18.90%) which included both acute and chronic cases. Exploratory laparotomy with omentopaxy 108 (65.85%) was the commonest surgical procedure performed followed by exploratory laparotomy with appendicectomy 19 (11.59%). The percentage of post operative complications was 10.37. Conclusion: Most of the laparotomies were done within 24 hours of seeking medical attention in the institution. Sophisticated time-consuming investigations are not a necessity for making a decision to proceed with laparotomy.
