Abstract

Ukrainian mythology is rich in diverse characters. Some of them have something in common with the demons of Slavic mythology (rusalka, vodianyk, witch), but there are a number of unique ones, which are only peculiar to the Carpathian region and have their own specific features. The purpose of this study is to analyze the causes of the formation of beliefs in supernatural beings among the inhabitants of the Carpathians, develop a typology and characterize the most famous mythical folklore characters in this region, namely khovanets, mavka, chort and upyr.
