Abstract
At the turn of the twentieth century, the territory of most Poland was occupied by Prussia. After the victorious war with France in 1871, Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898), Chancellor of Prussia, declared his Kulturkampf – the war on the Catholic Church and Germanisation of the Eastern provinces of German Reich – the territory of Poland occupied by Prussia. Schooling was to be one of the tools. As a result of Prussian acts and orders passed over 15 years, the Polish language was eliminated from elementary and secondary schools and replaced with German (with the exception of Religious Education classes). However, successively, German also replaced Polish in RE classes. Polish teachers were resettled to German Reich and their place was taken by German teachers. The students could not use the Polish language at school. In the educational process they were brought up as loyal Prussian citizens by trying to shape their Prussian identity and humiliating their Polish identity. Repressive educational methods were used, based on verbal, psychological and physical violence. This unfavourable atmosphere at school had a negative impact on the students’ psyche and their accomplishments.
