The application of grammatical transformations application in Ukrainian translations of H. G. Wells’s novel “The time machine”.

Abstract

The main goal of translation is achievement of adequacy. During any process of translation the text sustains some changes. They encompass both lexical and grammatical levels. This scientific article is devoted to special features of application of grammatical transformations in Ukrainian translations of H. G. Wells’s novel “The time machine” made by M. Ivanov and O Didyk. On the basis of comparative analysis the authors investigate the issue of grammatical transformations application, clarify their complexity and justifiability. A wide variety of grammatical transformations are applied in the process of the eventual variant of translation choice. During the work the authors have excluded and worked up the usage of such transformations as: replacement, inner integration, outer integration, inner partitioning, outer partitioning and compensation. The authors also examine cases where the transformation is unnecessary. It can be said that sometimes the translation process can cause difficulties which are connected with differences in grammar categories of the languages. The translation made by M. Ivanov showed about two hundred transformations, which indicates that the translator deviated from the norms of the source language in order to make the text easier for the Ukrainian reader to perceive and bring it closer to the norms of the Ukrainian syntax. In its turn, the translation made by O. Didyk demonstrates interpreter’s attempts to adhere to the norms of the original and simplify the translation. But in most cases, transformations were complex: in order to achieve adequacy – the main purpose of the translation – the translators applied several transformations simultaneously, and not only grammatical but lexical as well.
