The Concept of Alienation in Marx's Early Works: A Historical Approach
Journal Title: İzmir Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2021, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
The concept of alienation, whose historical origin is as old as humanity itself, has been interpreted differently by many philosophers both in antiquity and in the modern age and it has been used in different meanings by many societies in different periods of history. Alienation, which has a wide literature from the Old Testament to Roman law and even to Rousseau, who laid the intellectual foundations of the French revolution, was considered philosophically for the first time by Hegel. On the other hand, in his early works, Marx interpreted alienation as a result of class relations. This approach of Marx formed the basis of the current use of the concept. In this study, firstly the etymological origin and historical development of the concept of alienation has been examined and then the development of the concept in modern philosophy has been examined. Finally, the historical development process of the concept is compared with the concept of alienation in Marx's early works and similarities have been revealed.
