THE ECONOMIC ETYMOLOGY OF SUSTAINABILITY

Abstract

This article analyzes the economic etymology of the term "sustainability" and other similar in value terms, used by researchers to characterize position and dynamics of the economic systems, such as "balance", "stability", "stationarity", "reliability" and "predictability". It is determined that etymology ambiguity and a certain methodological pluralism that observed in the direction of the research conditions and criteria of sustainability are observed largely due to the fact that there are many frequent changes of the dominant economic theories, while the basic universal theory is absent. The expediency of implementation of the new system-structural or so-called neosystem economic theory is grounded from this perspective. This theory fills the methodological "gaps" of other theories, is seen practically significant, but it is currently elaborated only on a theoretical level, so a number of its provisions are hypothetical and require empirical confirmation. The theory assumes a priori separation of all economic systems into four types depending on their spatiotemporal localization. The combination of these four types in one system of higher level, by enhancing two-circuit mechanism of recipient-donor interaction between systems, appears stable in space and time. Accordingly, the structure of any long-term economic system can be distinguished into four subsystems of defined types. The results of the analysis suggest stability as more comprehensive, generalizing concept than all the others. However, other concepts may be based for determining the stability in the context of neosystemic economic theory. Particularly, balance and stability partially determine the sustainability of the system - respectively in time and space; stationarity and reliability characterize the mechanism of formation of the sustainability; predictability is the result of its implementation. The expediency of further development of the concept of economic sustainability in the context of new theory is substantiated on this basis.
