THE ECONOMY OF VOLYN’ REGION IN THE LATE ХІХ- EARLY ХХ CENTURIES

Abstract

The article deals with the economic development of Volyn’ province of late XIX - early XX century on the basis of primary sources and the works of historians. It was found that agriculture played leading role despite the significant increase in the number of enterprises in the economic life of the region. It is reported that much of companies that operate in Volyn’ in the study period were small. Also the important role at industrial development of the land played building railways. This contributed not only to create new jobs, but encouraged the development of mining and timber industries. Much of the production were implemented outside the region. The construction of railways boosted exports from Volyn’. Most of newly built business focused on processing of agricultural products. The largest sugar refineries, which products were not only implemented outside the province, and much of it exported, were the biggest among the companies in this group. The article draws our attention to that fact that besides its industrial production Volyn’ artisans who have been in several times more than employees traditionally played the important role in the economic life of region. At the beginning of the last century in the region continued to persist trend of increase in their number not only in rural areas but also in the province cities. The agricultural sector played the dominant role in the export of goods from Volyn’, much of its production was exported. The same situation at that time was not only in Volyn’. Generally in the early twentieth century, the role of the agricultural sector in the economy of a number of provinces of Ukraine was crucial. The leading role in the export of Volyn’ played: cereals, eggs and poultry products, hops, wood and sugar. Grain of Ukraine at the time exported to Western, Central and Southern Europe and the Middle East. But after the First World War the economy of Ukraine suffered huge losses. In Volyn’ it was complicated not only the cessation of export of agricultural products, it was intensified by the fact that region soon became the scene of warfare. This situation have weakened the economic potential of Volyn’, which before the war was insignificant, also influenced by the fact that the part of Volyn’ province was occupied by Austro-Hungarian troops for some time.
