THE EFFECT OF SYSTEMATIC PHYSICAL EXERCISE LIMITED BY PULSE ON CIRCULATORY SYSTEM PARAMETERS AND ADRENERGIC ACTIVITY IN THE ELDERLY

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2015, Vol 31, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The effect of physical exercise on parameters of the circulatory sys tem in the elderly is not sufficiently understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of systematic physical exercise, using the Nordic Walking (NW) me thod, on phy sical capacity, selected parameters of the circulatory system and adrenergic activity in a group of elderly subjects. Material and methods. The study involved 50 individuals aged above 65 years, who un derwent a 6-week physical exercise program during which the pulse was monitored. The control group consisted of 18 individuals, aged above 65 years, with similar circu latory system loads. Results. In the study group, the duration of exercise time increased by 1.02 minutes (p = 0.0001), maximum load increased by 10.68 WAT (p = 0.0001), VO 2max values increased by 2.10 (p = 0.0218), and distance in the 6MWT increased by 75.04 meters (p = 0.00001). Biochemical parameters (adrenaline and noradre naline concentration) did not change significantly during the study.Conclusions. 1. Systematic NW physical exercise limited by the pulse benefi cially influ ences the main parameters of physical capacity in elderly. 2. Short-term regular physical exercise does not significantly influence plasma concentration of catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline).
