The Extent and Mode of E-mail Usage in Organisations

Journal Title: International Journal of Contemporary Management - Year 2010, Vol 9, Issue 4

Abstract

The communication process in contemporary organisations has changed very rapidly as a result of technical development. One of the consequences of information revolution is the change in social communication as people use electronic communication to be in touch with other people more and more frequently. Changes are visible also in organisations. In recent years an increase in the significance of electronic communication tools have been noted as far as internal and external communication is concerned. The article presents results of empirical research focused on the extent and mode of e-mail usage in organisations. The scope of the study included 297 employees using e-mail at work representing companies, public organisations as well as non-government organisations. The author used a questionnaire as a research tool. The article identifies how many e-mails employees send and receive – in different employee groups and organisations. The results prove that e-mail communication has been popular, however, there is a vast diversity in e-mail activity among users. E-mail communication is much more dynamic than written communication – most employees respond to received e-mails and expect others to respond within one day. The other conclusion is that e-mail software is used for many different aims as well as communication process, e.g. time and knowledge management. The study confirmed that a separating line between private and work life becomes more and more blurred as a result of e-mail communication usage.
