The First UN Conference on the Law of the Sea, 1958: the Question of the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone

Abstract
The article deals with the most pressing issues related to the definition of the legal status and regimes of the territorial sea considered in the course of the First United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1958. The historical contribution of the First Conference of the codification and progressive development of public international law of the sea is highlighted. The positive evaluation of the Conference did not mean that the adopted conventions solved all questions of international maritime law, nor that their provisions are unchangeable. The Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone, the Convention on Fishing and Conservation of the Living Resources of the High Seas, and the Convention on the Continental Shelf were adopted at the end of the Conference and are widely recognized by states which have become parties to them, as well as marked the beginning of the codification and progressive development of the modern law of the sea.
