The hetero-image of savage in the novel «Wanting» by R. Flanagan

Abstract
The article expounds the author’s vision of the image of a savage in the creative works of an Australian writer Richard Flanagan on the basis of his novel «Wanting». The above mentioned image is studied as a part of a binary opposition to the image of a «civilized person». We have highlighted the distinguishing features of the both images in the novel and de¿ ned the inÀ uence of biographical details upon the author’s vision. Drawing the images of «savages» from a Tasmanian tribe in comparison to the ¿ nest representatives of the European continent, the author underlines the major differences between the two societies which are so different in their level of development and touches upon the philosophical issue of what we should see as truly civilized behavior
