Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Історія" - Year 2016, Vol 274, Issue 262

Abstract

The article is devoted to one of the famous Polish public figure, politician, memoirist, editor of «Culture» and publishing house «Literature Institute» Jerzy Giedroyc and his work in favor of the independent Ukrainian government. The author highlights activities of contemporary Polish leaders and institutions in the context of the basic ideas of J. Giedroyc. The author affirms that Giedroyc has created an intellectual environment for the formation of the Institute of the Polish opposition, offered a completely new vision of international relations and new European order, which involved an independent Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania. At the time when the Polish society was not yet ready to refuse the idea of Great Poland, the scientist argued that «won’t be free Poles, Czechs or Hungarians without free Ukrainian, Belarusians or Lithuanians». The formation and activities of Paris «Culture» and Letarary Institute became the tools for the implementation the idea of becoming independent Soviet republics. The Gedroyc’ activities the author connects with the development in interwar Europe a political movement that aimed to fight for the independent Soviet republics, that during the 1918–1921 came under the bolshevik influence. The special attention is paid to the work of scientists of The East Europe Studio (director – Jan Malicki) in the Warsaw University, St. Vladimir Foundation (Krakow, Director – Vladimir Mokry), Institute of Central and Eastern Europe (Lublin, Miroslav Filipovych) that continue the Giedroyc’ work towards the development of Polish-Ukrainian relations.
