The multiple meanings of the concept in the design: case study in design schools of Medellin
Journal Title: Trilogía Ciencia Tecnología Sociedad - Year 2015, Vol 7, Issue 12
Abstract
This article focuses on how the design schools in Medellin have an epistemological approach of the term ‘concept’, which ultimately defines the teaching approaches they have when it comes to teaching the creative process in these areas of design knowledge. To this end, a case study was carried out in seven institutions who have design-related programs: Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Fashion, Costume, Architecture and Design Engineering. For this study, we analyzed academic texts such as: theses, journal papers, books, research results, academic programs, booklets and talks, that were produced between January 2006 and December 2012. Interviews with teachers, researchers and managers of these institutions were included to complement this study. This aims to understand the operational differences in the work of the designer, which stem from the process of concept discussion that each school offers its students.
