THE NUMERALS IN GERMANIC LINGUISTIC RESEARCH

Abstract

Numerals are an essential part of language since they determine the relation of a single person to his surrounding. The functioning of numerals and the sophistication of their system define the complexity of the language and its speakers’ thinking. The aim of this article is to collect and review theoretical writings and results of various researches in this field in order to construct a basis for a further specific research. The works under review cover the following topics and are subdivided accordingly: the origin of the numeral as a concept, the etymology of the Germanic numerals, the reconstruction of the original forms of numerals, their variety and their function in texts. The article introduces different views and argues them with the results of later and more probable studies. As a conclusion the author outlines some of the principal notions regarding Germanic numerals.
