The picture of a music school teacher in the view of the pupils dropping out of school

Journal Title: "Konteksty Kształcenia Muzycznego" - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The article shows a problem, crucial to the musical art education, of a quality and range of working relationships between pupils and their teachers. The text consists of two parts – theoretical and the research one. In the first, based on the subject literature, the author signals key problems determining the process of communication and the role of teachers in a contemporary music school. In the latter – the research one, based on narrative interviews with music school-leavers, there is a picture of pedagogues with whom young graduates had a contact with in the process of art education. The target research group comprised young people who did not continue studying music but took up a university or technical course of study. The conducted research helped to formulate the reflection concerning the picture of teachers working at art schools. The musicians who start their teaching career encounter numerous problems associated not only with didactics but also with bringing up young people starting to play the instrument. What contributes to young people resigning from further music education is not only their rebellious attitude and questioning authorities, but also a change in their professional priorities and musical interests. Therefore, musicians-pedagogues should be aware that not always they educate prospective professional musicians but also amateurs and art audience.
