THE POETICS OF SPACE IN CHEKHOV'S THREE SISTERS

Abstract
The principal focus of the present interpretation is on some of the actual and abstract spatial notions in the play, the imagined stage props identified in the author’s stage directions (and the dialogues), the connection between the spatial orientation and the psychological-ideological quest of the characters, and the motif based on the mythologization of space. In order to analyze the examples appearing as fragments, the author relies primarily on the frame of reference propounded by Yuri Lotman and V.N. Toporov, concerning artistic space. From the very beginning, an examination of certain aspects of space can make it quite evident that, for Chekhov, ʻthe language of spatial relationsʼ is, indeed, a consciously applied artistic tool of portrayal.
