THE PROBLEMS OF RENDERING ENGLISH HUMOR IN ‘A BIT OF FRY AND LAURIE’ TV SHOW

Abstract

The article deals with peculiarities of equivalent translation of English humor in TV show ‘A Bit of Fry and Laurie”, defines the specificity of humor as the modern paradigm of ‘the comic’, clarifies the English way of humorous perception of the world, reveals the peculiarities of sketch show as the audiovisual genre, singles out the ways of humorous effect achieving in the source text and its translation by analyzing the source and target texts of the sketch show. The study reveals that the specific features of the English humor are as follows: eccentricity, irony, nonsense, ingenuity. We describe the peculiarities of the sketch show as a genre of audiovisual arts and reveal how it differs from other genres. They are as follows: meaningful verbal and non-verbal information transfers with increased intensity through visual and auditory channels; information distribution in a film text is characterized by higher strength. The article provides an analysis of humorous extracts of TV show “A Bit of Fry and Laurie”. During the analysis we concluded that the comic effect is achieved by means of pun, irony, false interpretation of statements, situational nonsense. One of the main peculiarities of the show is the creation of parodies of famous TV shows, political figures or other national realities. It was found that meaning gaps and lacunas arise in translation as a result of non-equivalent reproduction of source languages units.
