Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2014, Vol 20, Issue 3

Abstract

introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading public health problem worldwide. Introduction Cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD- implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) and the miniaturization of these devices allow for a radical extension of life. Despite the inestimable rescue value brought by implantable cardioverter – defibrillator, in this group of patients a deterioration of the quality of life often occurs. objective: The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life of patients after the implantation of cardioverter defibrillators using a MacNew questionnaire. material and methods: The study included 30 patients qualified for implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator. Educational intervention was used in this group. To assess the quality of life, the standardized MacNew questionnaire was applied twice, to estimate the three main spheres of the patients: psychological, social, and physical after implantation of the device. results: Analyzing the differences between the two measurements of parameters of the questionnaire in the study, a statistically significant increase in all its values was observed. The emotional status indicator increased by 0.51, on average; the level indicator of social contacts increased by 0.51, on average, and exercise capacity index increased by 0.49, on average. conclusions: The educational activities undertaken increased the quality of life of patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. This indicates that there is a need for intensified implementation of the programmes of education in this group of patients.
