THE REASONS FOR DIFFERENCES IN WEAR VOLUME IN POLYESTER OILS AND POLYESTER OILS/REFRIGERANT MIXTURES

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 261, Issue 3

Abstract

Friction pairs of refrigeration compressors are always lubricated by an oil/refrigerant mixture. This paper presents the results of wear amounts after tribological tests of different polyester oils from the same viscosity class ISO VG 32 and polyester oils/refrigerant R134a mixtures. Results showed a significant difference in wear after test with just oils as well as with mixtures with R134a. Spectral studies of tested oils were performed. It was confirmed that these are all polyester oils containing additives (dithiophosphate). In addition, in POE1 oil, the additive with sulfur groups (most likely a dispersant sulfonate) was detected. It has been found that the presence of the additive in the oil POE1 causes less wear in the friction node lubricated with both oil and a mixture POE1/R134a. The profilometric study of the used surface confirmed the effectiveness of the detected additive.
