The rehabilitative eff ects of the spine stabilization and posture correction exercise course on trunk muscle isometric strength and its symmetry in patients with lumbar disc herniation
Journal Title: Complementary & Alternative Medicine in Science - Year 2013, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. Changes in trunk muscle isometric strength, symmetry and quality of life under the impact of spine stabilization and posture correc- tion exercises in patients with intervertebral disk herniation and low back pain (LBP) were evaluated. Material and methods. Seventeen working -age persons (8 women and 9 men) with radiologically diagnosed lumbar intervertebral disk herniation and low back pain took part in the investi- gation. They participated in a spine stabilization and posture correction exercise program, consisting of 9 individualized performances 45 min. each 3 times a week. Then trunk muscle isometric strength (dr Wolff “Back-Check”), low back pain Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS), functional impairment in accordance with the Oswestry questionnaire were evaluated. Results. It has been found out after completion of the individualized spine stabi- lization and posture correction physical exercise in men that back muscle isometric strength has signifi cantly increased (p<0.05). In women back and waist side muscle isometric strength has also increased (p<0.05). Before and after individualized physical exercise course, isometric strength of back and abdomen muscle in men and women was signifi cantly diff erent. The symmetry of isometric strength of back-abdominal muscles both in men and women increased insignifi cantly. LBP at rest in women and men decreased after applied physical exercise program (p<0.05), functional impairment in women and men also decreased (p<0.05). Conclusions. For patients with chronic LBP, we recommend to measure isometric strength of trunk muscles, the symmetry of back–abdomen and waist-side muscles isometric strength before applying physical exercise program using dr Wolff “Back–Check” device. We also strongly recommend to continue the exercise program later at home or a sports center.
