The rhetorical concept of the form in Jasna Góra’s 18th century passional works

Journal Title: Notes Muzyczny - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 7

Abstract

Monastery of the Order of St Paul in Jasna Góra had an important place in the music culture of the 18th century Poland. Pilgrims to St Mary’s shrine were Polish kings, nobility, clergy, but first of all – common town and country dwellers. All of them stood before the miraculous icon with supplication or thanksgiving, entrusting their worries to the Mother of our Saviour in those difficult times when Poland was partitioned and there were no perspectives for the future. The monastery was a place where artistic life flourished, one if its most suggestive examples being music activity. The Jasna Góra ensemble – a group of secular and monasterial musicians – performed varied repertoire during masses, processions and other services at the sanctuary. As a tradition, spiritual life was intensified during Lent when atonement was expressed in the participation of a great number of people in occasional services and ceremonies. In the archives of the Order of St Paul, a few works for this time of church year written by the ensemble musicians have been preserved. Arias and cantata-type compositions by F. Kotrycz (ca. 1727–1787), F. Pernecker (?–1769) and I. Rygall (?–?) were performed during liturgies and on Holy Saturday as “music at Christ’s Tomb”. The repertoire can be distinguished by the used texts (poetry, fragments of the Bible) and music elaborations (rhetorical figures, dynamics, line-up, and texture). Pieces by Jasna Góra’s composers prove the extensive activity of St Paul ensemble and are valuable historical objects in Polish music culture of past times.
