THE ROLE OF ANIMALISTIC IMAGES IN ROBERT MUSIL’S SHORT PROSE

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the animalistic images research in the short prose by R. Musil. In the text canvas of Austrian short prose of the early XX century complex socio-cultural phenomenon is demonstrated as well as the variety and multi-aspects of its poetics. A set of modification is defined and some specific features of allegoric reading are figured out in the works «Monkey island» and «Flypaper». The significance and function of animalistic images are focused. They present the way of artistic depiction of the society at the end of the XIX – early XX centuries with a projection for the discovery in the works the topics of dictatorship, totalitarianism and war. It is proved that R. Musil artistic outlook contains the elements showing the surpass of reality border that is expressed through detailed comparison. So, the animals start to acquire human traits, transforming into the invective caricature of the Austrian society. The author uses allegory as a way of its (society) depicting, predicting the dominance of dictatorship and totalitarianism and consequently the loss of social orientation for the intellectual in the face of war and devastation. In this context, the short prose by R. Musil is not only the author’s embodiment of ideas about a man and the world, but also a peculiar reflection of moral, socio-political and cultural problems that still have not lost their potential.
