The role of professor M.L. Shchukin (1824-1924) in the development of women’s higher technical education

Abstract

The first in the Russian Empire higher technical school for women was established 110 years ago, on 28th January 1906. Higher women polytechnic courses were opened in St. Petersburg. Professor Mykola Leonidovych Shchukin who was called the «father of Russian locomotive building» was elected the rector of the Technological Institute. There was only one department in the institution during the first two years. Architectural and Civil Engineering departments appeared later. Moreover Architectural department enjoyed a great popularity. The need to create such a facility in the Russian Empire was evidenced by fact that there were submitted 700 applications in the first year alone and the contest was three persons in place. M.L. Shchukin made such major gains that there were four faculties at these courses: Architectural, Civil Engineering, Electromechanical and Chemical and education period grew to 7 years. The analysis of M.L. Shchukin’s pedagogical activity has been made in the article.
