The SEL Model as an Element Supporting Personal Development and a Tool for Counteracting Discrimination and Exclusion. Prevention of Mental Disorders at School

Abstract
Discrimination and social exclusion are problems present in almost every community. Starting from the definitions of these phenomena, the author discusses the issues of pupils at risk of exclusion due to developmental difficulties related to mental disorders. The aim of the article is to draw attention to the school’s responsibility for and possibilities of preventing and promoting mental health. Therefore, the author’s consideration do not focus on how teachers can counteract discrimination because of specific disorders or socio-emotional developmental difficulties, but on how they can be prevented. One solution proposed in the article is the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Model, which can be used as a tool to foster development and counter act discrimination.
