THE YOUTH WORD OF THE YEAR AS AN ACTUAL OBJECT OF LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS

Abstract

The language variability was always due to both extra- and intralinguistic factors and remains in the view of researchers-linguists. The central object of represented work is German teenage slang. The article is devoted to the study of the concept of “youth word of the year” and its influence on the understanding of the vocabulary of modern German teenage slang, in particular in the field of word-formation. The analysis was based on the material of the top 10 winning words in the “Youth Word of the Year“ category, according to the Langenscheidt publisher and jury, which included language experts and media representatives. In 2017 the top 10 of youth words were: I bims, geht fit, napflixen, unlügbar, Selfiecide, schatzlos, Merkules, Teilzeittarzan, tinderjährig, Noicemail. The study founded that youth slang germs are heterogeneous by their nature. From the position of word-formation was fixed the attachment of all base models. For example, typical examples of derivation are the lexical units unlügbar and schatzlos, while such slang words as Teilzeittarzan, tinderjährig and Noicemail show the representation of determinant composites. In terms of borrowed linguistic material, the undeniable influence of the English language is observed, which can be traced in some of the presented lexical units (I bims, napflixen, Selfiecide, tinderjähtig, Noicemail). One of the main ways of forming of the analyzed lexical units is a metaphorical transformation, which is an evidence of the creative potential of the young generation. Perspective in the aspect of further research is the inclusion of all youth slang germs that were put to the vote and their comprehensive analysis in the communicative-pragmatic, lexical-semantic and translation aspect.
