THEY WORK WITH YOU HOW THEY PERCEIVE YOU. THE ATHELETES' PERCEPTION OF THE WOMEN AND MAN COACHES.

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 5

Abstract

Background. Observing the sports environment leads to a question: why are there so little women-coaches, training the elite level athletes. Many psychologists have asked the same question and their answers to that can be divided into two groups: some of them think that the reason is that the women have to meet higher expectances, others suggest that it is more important how the athletes themselves perceive the woman-coach. Both views are supported by many reasearches on this subject. Our experiment had the aim of checking what are the preferences of the athletes towards their imaginary coach depending on the sex of their actual coach.Material and methods. The authors’ questionnaire T-I was used on a group of 40 judo and shooting athletes (N=40). The questionnaire measured how the athlete perceived the actual coach’s traits and what were the imaginary “ideal” coach’s traits.Results. The analysis of variance ANOVA has shown that the male athletes prefer a male coach (F (3,39)=11,44, p<0,01) regardiess of the sex of their actual coach. The hypothesis that the athletes would prefer the coach of the same sex as their actual coach did not get the empirical support.Conclusions. The results show that the woman-leader behaviors and traits (connected with the emotional management and giving the psychological support) are wanted by the athletes trained by a man, but when working with the male athletes a coach should have more typical male behaviours and traits (eg. Self-confidence, initiative, activeness).
