Thrombocytopenia in the course of thyrotoxicosis in 16 year-old girl

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2014, Vol 27, Issue 10

Abstract

Hyperthyroidism is a relatively rare condition in developmental age. Approximately in 95% of children thyrotoxicosis is caused by Graves’ disease. The coincidence of thyrotoxicosis and thrombocytopenia is also very rare, especially in teenagers. The association between these two diseases may suggest its commune pathogenesis or etiology. In patients with Graves’ disease the risk of thrombocytopenia is reported in various phases of disease. Thyrotoxicosis itself can cause the activation of reticuloendothelial system by elevated thyroid hormones what results the decrease of the half-life of thrombocytes. And during the treatment the thrombocytopenia can be the result of toxic effect of thyrostatics on bone marrow cells. We presented the case of 16-year-old girl with thrombocytopenia and thyrotoxicosis in whom clinical signs of thrombocytopenic purpura were the predominant symptom. The case confirms the role of the thyroid hormones in maintaining the balance of the hematopoietic system. It also indicates that the normalization of thyroid hormones has a significant influence on good effects of therapy in a patients with thrombocytopenia.
