Thyroid lesions: A potential hornet’s nest

Abstract

Background: Thyroid lesions are the one of the most commonly encountered problems in any hospital in current times. The under lying reasons maybe very many. This study aims at finding the most common presenting lesion in Dakshina Kannada. Materials and Methods: Two year prospective study comprising 300 consecutive thyroidectomy specimens received at Department of Pathology at a Tertiary Care Hospital, Mangalore. Inclusion Criteria: All lobectomy, isthumectomy, hemi thyroidectomy, subtotal, near total and total thyroidectomy specimens with macroscopically and microscopically detected neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. Recurrent tumours. Exclusion criteria: 1. Metastasis from thyroid tumours to other sites without resection of the primary lesion. Results: Neoplasms were present only in 19% of cases, which included malignant neoplasms in 15.4% cases. The commonest lesion encountered was adenomatous goiter (84.3%), followed by papillary carcinoma thyroid (13.33%). An overall female preponderance was noted with a M:F ratio of 1: 6.3. Age ranged from 17 to 78 years, with a peak incidence in the 4th decade of life (32%). Conclusion: Careful examination is necessary to identify coexistent ancillary pathologies, distinguish benign mimickers of malignancy from true malignancies.
