Tooth loss and its influence on Tooth Wear Index in subjects with pathological tooth wear
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2012, Vol 65, Issue 5
Abstract
Introduction. It is well known that the loss of teeth can accelerate wear of the teeth remaining in the oral cavity. However, it is controversial if the loss of teeth can be recognized as the single etiological factor of pathological tooth wear. The aim of the study was to assess the potential effect of tooth loss on the process of wear in patients with pathological tooth wear. Material and methods. 50 patients with severe tooth wear (mean age: 49.5 ± 9 years) were compared with 20 healthy volunteers (mean age: 48.5 ± 6 years). In order to assess the status of dentition the clinical examination was performed. Additionally, the TWI was determined for each tooth. Results. Negative correlation was noted between the number of teeth and TWI (r= -0.526, p<0.000), between the number of pairs of occluding teeth and TWI (r= -0.461, p<0.000) as well as the number of occluding pairs in the lateral part of dental arches and TWI (r= -0.483, p<0.000). Conclusion. The loss of teeth could accelerate the process of wear in subjects susceptible to pathological wear. However, it cannot be treated as a single factor causing pathological tooth wear.
