Towards the rationality of statement and action, and the employment of mirror neurons in music education Part II. Towards the employment of mirror neurons in music education

Journal Title: "Konteksty Kształcenia Muzycznego" - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

The author continues her discussion on the need for changes in music education, inspired by philosophical reflection of J. Habermas and current knowledge of how the brain functions. In the 2nd part, she focuses on the discovery of mirror neurons. She discusses their activity and next moves on to the implications, resulting from their existence, for education, music schools included. She indicates recommended directions for changes: individual diversification of education within the school system, opening up to a new perception of the teaching profession, return to the occupational ethos – true and reliable support provided to pupils by a teacher. She appeals for the employment of mirror neurons in music-teaching and the assertion that music is thoroughly processed in a pupil’s mind. The teacher’s task is, in view of the presented arguments, to provide conditions for development – “emergence” of a pupil’s personality. Teacher’s awareness of mirror neurons becomes a formative factor in the achievement of a new quality of the teacher-pupil relationship, whereas the knowledge of their essence and functions may contribute to the harmonization of mutual relations, based more on understanding and agreement than on power and instruction.
