Trace: A Linguistic Signal of Narrative Event

Abstract

The article deals with specifying linguistic means of realising the event in R. W. Chambers' story "In the Court of the Dragon", which is the material of the research. The scientific method used is narrative trace examination, or narrative tracing. Traces are exposed by analysing communicative competence of the narrator (who is nameless in the story) as he is choosing logical arguments to substantiate the event as real. The results demonstrate that the event is an abstract entity embodied in certain manifested incidents. Traces are realised as oppositions of signals indicating the event. Interpretation of the supernatural event determines the story's logic as being based on assumption mistake. Mistakes, signifying the event, are ignored by the narrator thus confirming the latter's unsatisfactory communicative competence. Competence is analysed in the article in its traditional treatment as a complex of abilities possessed by the narrator in picking the most effective communicative conduct based on knowledge, skills, and motivations. Thereto objective, cultural, linguistic, and interactional aspects of communicative competence are studied. Conclusions made in the course of the analysis show that the narrator's choice of arguments is connected with interrelated mistakes confirming his unsatisfactory communicative competence. These mistakes make the narrative untrustworthy and allow concluding that they require a particular narratee capable of believing everything told by the narrator. This state of competence is, however, characteristic of the narrators within plots of Gothic tradition and is therefore indicative of the fact that "In the Court of the Dragon" is a typical Gothic story.
