TRANSLATION AND INTERLINGUAL LEXICO-SEMANTIC CORRESPONDENCES (BASED ON RUSSIAN AND BULGARIAN CORPORA)

Journal Title: Мова - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 27

Abstract

Purpose: The article attempts to clarify the concepts ’interlingual equivalence’, ’transformation’ and ’interpretation’, as well as identify their specifi c features. Therefore, the study focuses on the concepts of ’interlingual equivalence’, ’transformation’ and ’interpretation’ from the point of view of the universal features of the linguistic sign. Findings: The specifi city of the concepts ’interlingual equivalence’, ’transformation’ and ’interpretation’ has been identifi ed in the process of rendering the information inherent in the source lexico-semantic unit into the target language. Conclusions: Equivalence is based upon ’sameness’ on the level of the class and genus-species relationship, which forms semantically correlative interlingual lexico-sematic correspondences; transformation is not characterised by the sameness of the specifi ed universal features, but transformational correspondences possess a certain associative sematic connection; interpretation has no connection whatsoever with the abovementioned features — the correspondences are created on the basis of a logical or notional (situational) link, and there is no sematic connection between them. The fi ndings could have practical application mainly in the teaching of translation theory, where the identifi cation of the specifi c features of the concepts ’interlingual equivalence’, ’transformation’ and ’interpretation’ could help to enhance students’ understanding of the nature of the translation process.
