Turkish Becoming Rich in Literary Texts

Journal Title: Söylem Filoloji Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

From past to present, language is undoubtedly one of the most important elements that influence the existence of humankind. Even though there are many criteria about the richness of languages, the most salient of them is their lexicon. Yet, lexicon is not a concept that entirely comprehends the language. It just quantitatively reflects the number of words in a language. On the other hand “vocabulary” is used as an expression that involves whole richness of a language. Besides, the expression of “language’s richness” means to understand a language’s narrative power and diversity of narration ways. In this respect, Turkish shows a remarkable linguistic richness. Language prospers with connotations. Therefore, when considering the richness of a language, literary texts written in that language must be taken into consideration. In this context, especially poetry offers notable opportunities to measure the richness of languages. One of the most striking expression pattern of Turkish is imitative-indefinite noun phrase that is a subgenre of indefinite noun phrase. The studies on this type of noun phrase are crucial in terms of indicating the richness of Turkish. In this study, with the mentioned features above, some certain assessments will be made about the richness of Turkish through literary texts.
